How to update your V5C vehicle registration when you move

If you own a vehicle, you need to update the address on your V5C registration certificate (logbook) when you move. Like the driving licence, it's free and can be done online.

Why do I need to update my V5C?

Your V5C logbook is proof of the registered keeper of a vehicle. If the address is wrong, you won't receive important correspondence like MOT reminders, DVLA letters, or penalty charge notices. It's a legal requirement to keep it up to date.

How to update it

You can update your V5C online through GOV.UK. You'll need the 11-digit reference number from your V5C document and your new address. It takes about 2 minutes.

What if I can't find my V5C?

You can apply for a replacement V5C and update your address at the same time. This costs £25 and can be done through GOV.UK.

Common questions

Is updating my V5C free?

Can I update my V5C and driving licence at the same time?
They're separate services, but you can do both in the same sitting — it only takes a few minutes each.
